PUNA was born in Keaukaha, around Thanksgiving of 1997. She was my "first born Dog" after many years of condo cats back in Oahu. Puna is an American Staffordshire Terrier "mix". We think of her as the "Mama" dog. She used to be a daily visitor to BarkPark, near the Diamond Head KCC campus, where she'd socialize with her friends. BarkPark had a great sign posted on a tree... "No Bitches In Heat", that always made me laugh on the inside.
We got our sweet pitbull COKO around Christmas 1998. She was a Chrismas present for my son Randy. She's my "Hawaiian" dog, from Waianae. She's one half pitbull and one half Am-Staff. She looks "pretty damn mean", but in reality just wants to kiss everyone! Coko is easily Hawaii's SWEETEST pitbull.
My third dog stumbled into out lap after we relocated to the Big Island. JACO, our Blue Heeler (Australian Herding dog) came to us via the Keaau Humane Society. Jaco is actually female, named after one of my favorite jazz bass players, the "late" Jaco Pastorius.
I stumbled upon MAKANA while remodeling my Kapahulu condo, flying to/from Oahu on my days off at the Hilo Medical Center. Makana's family ~ Jana Shambaugh and her son Dominic Pama were relocating to the East Coast after a stint at Hickam Air Force Base. They were carefully looking for a new home for Makana. (Dominic is pictured above with Makana as a puppy.) Fortunately, I was the chosen recipient and Makana became my forth and only male dog.
Makana is 3/4 mini pinscher and 1/4 chihuahua and he loves to sit in my lap. He's a smart, compact and super-portable dog.
AREN'T FOUR INDOOR DOGS ENOUGH GLEN?
How many? I inherited TRUMPET (by default) when my son Randy relocated to Anchorage, AK. Trumpet is a female pitbull mix and a kind, sweet dog... and, what a smile!
Trumpet experiences "total euphoria" when I sing her special, original song to her. With the addition of Trumpet, we're now at FIVE dogs!

RE: PITBULLS - MY THOUGHTS & FEELINGS
Contrary to popular belief, a well trained and loved Pitbull is an intellegent, super loyal and obedient pet. I find the negative stereotype and prejudice associated with this breed extremely disturbing. My Pitbull "Coko" just wants to please me, always demonstrating her loyalty and undivided love. Long story short, be mindful and pro-active when raising your Pitbull puppy.
